Born: October 1, 1935 (age 80), Walton-on-Thames, United Kingdom 

She was a success on the English stage before duplicating that success on Broadway. She won an Academy Award for playing the title role in Mary Poppins and was nominated for her performance in The Sound of Music. Additionally, she received Tony Award nominations for her roles in Camelot and My Fair Lady. Andrews worked on a number of acclaimed films with husband Blake Edwards, and was made an English dame in 2000.

Andrews' stepfather sponsored lessons for her, first at the Cone-Ripman School (now known commonly as ArtsEd), an independent arts educational school in London. continued her academic education at the nearby Woodbrook School, a local state school in Beckenham.

Early Carrer:

Andrews first found success on the English stage in the late 1940s, and then moved to America in the 1950s, where she starred in the musical The Boyfriend from 1954 to 1955. The following year, she starred in My Fair Lady as Eliza Doolittle, a role that earned her a Tony Award nomination for best actress in a musical. She followed that stellar performance with another lead role in the musical Camelot in 1960, for which she earned her second Tony Award nomination.

Film Success :

In 1963, Walt Disney asked Andrews if she would like to star in his upcoming production, a lavish musical fantasy that combined live-action and animation. She agreed on the condition if she didn't get the role of Doolittle in the pending film production of Mi bella dama (1964). After Audrey Hepburn was cast in My Fair Lady, Andrews made an auspicious film debut in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins (1964),Is the only actress to be nominated for (and later win) the Oscar in the Lead Actress category in a Walt Disney film (Mary Poppins (1964)). which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. The Sound of Music was a part in another musical, which featured her in a care-giving role to the von Trapp family, than also Andrew win the globe.

Andrews continued to work on Broadway, until the release of La novicia rebelde She soon found that audiences identified her only with singing, sugary-sweet nannies and governesses, and were reluctant to accept her in dramatic roles in  (1965), the highest-grossing movie of its day and one of the highest-grossing of all time. 

Her performance as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins (1964) is ranked #45 on Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time.  she is one of six women who has received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for a performance directed by her spouse, namely for : directed by Blake Edwards. The other five are Elisabeth Bergner for Escape Me Never (1935) (directed by Paul Czinner), Joanne Woodward for Rachel, Rachel (1968) (directed by Paul Newman), Jean Simmons for The Happy Ending (1969),  (directed by Richard Brooks), Gena Rowlands for Una mujer bajo la influencia (1974).


In the 1980s, She starred in 1981's S.O.B., which provided a satirical look at Hollywood and was directed by her second husband Blake Edwards with roles that were entirely different from anything she had been seen in before. The next year, Andrews took gender-bending to new heights as a woman who pretends to be man pretending to a woman in Victor/Victoria in 1982 which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role.  Gloria (1980) (both directed by John Cassavetes. Over the next several years, she would work on many projects with her husband, including Darling Lili (1970), The Man Who Loved Women (1983) and That's Life (1986).  In 1990's she had successful return to the theatre. However, in the late 1990s a throat operation meant she was left unable to sing

For her Perfomance in the musical  she earned her third Tony Award nomination, for best actress in a musical. Received a standing ovation at The 75th Annual Academy Awards (2003) when she appeared to present a short film celebration sequence.

Recent Work:

More recently, Julie Andrews performed as the voice of Queen Lillian in the second and third installments of the animated film series Shrek.  In 2001, she starred in El diario de la princesa (2001), alongside then-newcomer Anne Hathaway. The family film was one of the most successful G-Rated films of that year, and Andrews reprised her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in El diario de la princesa 2 (2004). In recent years, Andrews appeared in Hada por accidente (2010), as well as a number of voice roles in Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek tercero (2007), Encantada (2007), Shrek para siempre (2010), and Mi villano favorito (2010).

Princess Diares 2 was the first time she had sung in public or on screen since she had throat surgery in 1997. She reportedly nailed the song on the first take, and brought tears to the eyes of the crew present.
At the age of 77, Andrews undertook her first tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2013, hosted by Nicholas Hammond. who was a boy of 14 when they appeared together in The Sound of Music. In place of singing, she planned a series of speaking engagements in Australia's five mainland state capitals. There were security concerns surrounding the event at New Zealand.The following year she took the same show on a tour of England, culminating in two shows in London.
In 2015 Andrews made a surprise appearance at the Oscars, greeting Lady Gaga who paid her homage by singing a medley from The Sound of Music. This became a social media sensation, trending all over the world.
Lyndon Terracini announced in August 2015 that Andrews will direct My Fair Lady in 2016 for Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House


Personal Life:

Andrews has been married twice, first to set designer Tony Walton from 1959 until 1967, then to director Blake Edwards from 1969 until his death in 2010.
Andrews married Walton on 10 May 1959 in Weybridge, Surrey. They had first met in 1948 when Andrews was appearing at the London Casino in the show Humpty Dumpty. Andrews and Walton headed back to Britain in September 1962 to await the birth of daughter Emma Katherine Walton, who was born in London two months later.
Andrews married Edwards in 1969; his children from a previous marriage, Jennifer and Geoffrey, were 3 and 5 years older than Emma, Andrews' daughter with Tony Walton.In the 1970s, Edwards and Andrews adopted two daughters; Amy in 1974 and Joanna in 1975. Andrews is a grandmother to nine and great-grandmother to three.
